There are 6 core (or required) GE subjects: These are:

  • Wika 1 (Wika, Kultura, at Lipunan)
  • Math 10 (Mathematics, Culture, and Society)
  • Kas 1 (Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas)
  • Ethics 1 (Ethics and Moral Reasoning in Everyday Life)
  • Comm 10 (Critical Perspectives in Communication)
  • STS (Science, Technology, and Society)

These GE courses are required for all BS Nursing students. However, it is up to the student which core GE subjects he or she would take in a semester for as long as these are not in conflict with the schedule of Nursing professional courses. This means that for 1st year, they may not take Comm 10 as indicated in the tentative schedule and may enroll in any of the above GE courses.

Aside from the 6 core GE subjects, BS Nursing students will also need to enroll in 2 GE elective subjects. Some of the choices for GE electives are:

  • Arts 1 (Critical Perspectives in the Arts)
  • SAS 1 (Self and Society)
  • PhilArts 1 (Philippine Arts and Culture)
  • Science 10 (Probing and Physical World)
  • Science 11 (Living Systems)

There are other GE electives to choose from. You may refer to the CAS Schedule of Classes for the other choices.

It is advisable that all GE core and elective subjects as well as mandated CAS-based subjects are taken before 3rd year status. Hence, in the BS Nursing program of study, we have suggested how these courses can be spread in the first two years.

Yes, and these courses are prerequisites to Nursing professional courses. This includes:

  • Chem 30 (Organic Chemistry)
  • Chem 40 (Elementary Biochemistry)
  • Orcomm 111 (Technical Writing)
  • Math 101 (Elementary Statistics)
  • PI 100 (Life and Works of Rizal)

The BS Nursing program of study specifies the semester and year level these subjects need to be taken.

Aside from these subjects, all BS Nursing students need to complete 4 physical education subjects – one of these should be PE 1 (Foundations of Physical Fitness) and three are PE 2.

You have three options.

First, you can search for other GE subjects that are not in conflict with the schedule of Nursing professional courses. You can enlist in these subjects. Be guided, however, on the core and elective GE subjects required.

Second, if the GE subject that you are supposed to enlist to is the only GE subject that you are yet to take, you can request for an additional slot. This procedure entails that you accomplish a form from the CAS Office of the College Secretary to be signed by your program adviser at the College of Nursing and approved by the faculty teaching the GE subject. This option, however, is only available during the general registration period, and not during pre-enlistment. There is also no assurance that the faculty-in-charge of the course will approve the request for an additional slot.

Third, if there are more than 10 students intending to enroll in the same GE subject, they can file for a petition to open a new section. The petition needs to be formally lodged at the CAS Office of the College Secretary. Since this is a GE subject, students who will petition need not come from the same degree program. There is also no assurance that the request for petition will be approved.

According to the memorandum of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (2020-143), the minimum load for full time students has been decreased from 15 units to 12 units. This means that you can at the minimum take 12 academic units next semester and you will still be considered a full-time student. However, there may be consequences of reducing the academic units below what is prescribed in the program of study and this depends on the course which will not be taken.

If you decide not to take a GE subject, you would need to anticipate being overloaded in the succeeding semesters. The maximum allowable academic load per semester is 21 units (or 6 units during midyear). Skipping a GE subject would mean that you would need to take this subject in the succeeding semesters or midyears which would result in overloading. In general, we do not encourage going on overload as this may take a toll on the part of the student.

If you decide not to take any of the mandated CAS-based subjects or Nursing professional courses, this would affect your graduation period. Since the mandated CAS-based subjects are prerequisites and the Nursing professional courses are offered only once a year, skipping these would entail additional semester/s and year/s into your program.
