International Study Program in Nursing

When the demand for Philippine-trained nurses rose to unprecedented proportion, the College of Nursing started receiving numerous/varied requests from nursing institutions abroad. From a single visit and orientation to the degree programs of the College, to actual observation/sitting in to a single class session, or actual clinical in the hospital and the community – both urban and rural. Most of these institutions have indicated desire to regularize these visits/clinical experiences or to pursue formal partnerships. There are also many requests for interviews and/or orientation to the UP BSN curriculum and Philippine nursing.

The Philippines is a most likely destination within the region because of the good reputation of Filipino nurses and our facility with the English language. In this regard, there has been an escalation of feelers for possible partnerships or tie-ups with institutions both from western countries such as the United States of America, and Asia, particularly Japan, Thailand and Indonesia. In all these countries, they offer opportunities for their undergraduate students to have about 1-2 weeks study abroad to enhance their international perspectives.

At the university level, MOA/MOU has been signed between the University of the Philippines Manila and the foreign universities:

JAPAN
INDONESIA

The need to respond to global challenges and demands for nursing development are more real now than ever before. The direction towards international cooperation in nursing education, practice & research has been demonstrated in international fora, conferences & international working groups. Opportunities for collegial nursing provide mutual benefits across countries & cultures, create opportunities for funding and support, develop the nursing profession and help define the role of nursing in nation building.

The International Study Program in Nursing is in line with the vision and mission of the college towards excellence and nursing development. The designation of the College as a WHO Collaborating Center for Leadership in Nursing Development, and as Center of Excellence (COE) by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) strengthens this resolve to continue sharing our expertise, providing assistance and cooperation for the development of the nursing profession.

Goals and Objectives

The International Study Program in Nursing seeks to contribute to the university’s goal in becoming an academic training institution recognized in the region and the rest of the world for its quality and excellence in nursing education, practice and research.

The College of Nursing envisions an international program that promote partnership, as well as goodwill and understanding among nursing institutions in the international community.
