Overview of the Program
The WHO Global Health Nursing Leadership Program is an online course on ‘fit for the future’ global nursing leaders in the WHO Western Pacific Region.
This 6-week program aims to develop ‘fit for the future’ nursing leaders that will be able to step up and drive health outcomes through a systems-based approach built on the foundations of a strong primary health care, to face the challenges and changing health landscape due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to achieve Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals. This program is jointly offered by the University of the Philippines Manila – College of Nursing and the Peking Union Medical College – School of Nursing.
Webinar 1: Introduction to Global Health Nursing

The role of nurses in global health cannot be over-emphasized given the global health issues and current challenges in the COVID-19 pandemic and its many impacts on countries. Health systems including the nursing workforce need to be strengthened and revitalized. The WHO Strategic directions on strengthening nursing and midwifery provide the blueprint on how countries can invest in nursing education and nursing workforce to improve health care delivery. These topics are discussed in the webinar by our esteemed speakers, Ms. Elizabeth Iro, Dr. Masahiro Zakoji, and Dr. Carey McCarthy.

Achievement of sustainable health systems changes relies on the nurses’ strategic leadership and management capabilities. As a leader, the nurse needs to be equipped and positioned to influence health system decisions. Strategic leadership skills enable nurses to determine the needs of the nursing workforce, populations, and health systems and apply management strategies to collaborate, influence, and operationalize plans toward positive outcomes.
This topic is led by our esteemed speaker, Prof. Mary Chiarella followed by high yield outputs from nurse leaders in China, Japan, Korea, and Philippines.
