Student Initiatives
1. Health Awareness Initiatives
(Mental health, sexual health, etc..)
As the highest governing body of the students in UP College of Nursing, it is necessary for the council to create projects that are beneficial for the growth and overall wellness of the students. With this, the council pushes for health awareness initiatives through upcoming projects such as Kaakibat Mo: A Mental Health Promotion Campaign, a long-term campaign of the NSC for the promotion of mental health; Rights, Responsibilities and Realities: Addressing Sexual and Reproductive Health Barriers During the COVID-19 Crisis (Webinar), an online health education initiative by the NSC that aims to discuss the importance of upholding basic healthcare services under the RH Law (RA 10354).
2. Student Services
(Nursing Life Hacks, Educational discussions, Paper sessions, Free mobile loading service, etc)
In an effort to meet the needs of the studentry, encourage active citizenship and promote academic excellence, the council offered a wide range of support services such as the UPCNnect, wherein the council provided assistance for students in need of mobile load, a nursing paper workshop entitled Nursing Life Hacks, intended to suggest more efficient strategies to improve academic writing, as well as to prepare the freshmen for the higher nursing courses. Students may also reach the NSC for urgent concerns and grievances through the NSC Hotlines and Grievance Form.
Activities
1. SINAG
Student Initiated Network of Allies in Governance (SINAG) is a group composed of bonafide UPCN student volunteers to the NSC. They primarily assist in the preparation and implementation of the projects of the NSC.
SINAG members are distributed among the six (6) NSC committees, namely: Students’ Rights, Welfare, and Basic Services (STRAWBS); Gender, Culture and Arts; Sports and Wellness; National and Local Issues; Health and Environment; and Academics and Research.
Aside from these committees, SINAG members are also assigned to one (1) of the two (2) internal committees within SINAG, namely Creatives Committee and Projects Assistance and Services Committee.
SINAG members shall serve until a new set of volunteers has been made, following the induction of the newly appointed officers. They may also join SINAG for as many terms as they wish.
2. Freshie Orientation
The NSC, in cooperation with the college administration and other accredited organizations, holds an orientation and welcome ceremony for the incoming freshmen at the beginning of every academic year to give the students an overview of college life.
3. Org Fair
The UPCN Org Fair provides an opportunity for the students in the College of Nursing to find out more about the various organizations that exist not only within the college, but also within the university. It is an activity that encourages students to join local and university-wide organizations. On the other hand, the org fair also serves as an avenue for the organizations to introduce their services, advocacies, and projects to the students.
4. Nurses Month/UPCN Foundation
In celebration of the Nurses’ Month and UPCN Foundation, the NSC partakes with the UP College of Nursing in launching programs and information and awareness drives on Nursing. Some of these efforts are [1] video outputs that depict the history of nursing in the Philippines and the journey of UPCN as an esteemed institution and as the home of our Nars ng Bayan, [2] publicity materials on the state of nursing in the Philippines, and others.
Projects
1. Donations
As one of NSC’s aims is to be of service not only to the students of the College of Nursing but also to the Filipino society, the council has participated in various projects that aim to provide assistance to victims of the grave problems the Philippines had to face in the past year.
NSC has organized a call for donations for the victims and the evacuees of the Taal volcano ashfall eruption last January 12, and January 21, 2020. After spreading publication materials and doing room-to-room campaigning, they were able to gather monetary donations from all batches in the college and other donors. These were then forwarded to the AMIGA community, the council’s partner volunteer team of medical interns, in coordination with the UP Community Health and Development Program.
On the other hand, the council also partnered with different organizations in their various projects to extend help to patients with COVID-19 and/or families affected by the pandemic. These include the following:
- Partnership with Bangon Pilipino (April 2020): Bangon Pilipino organized a donation drive that aims to help affected families during the pandemic by providing relief packs. The NSC’s role was to share publication materials to widen the reach of the project.
- Daluyong: Pagsulong sa Alon ng Panahon (July 2020): Partnership with the UP Manila Chorale which organized a fundraising event to help the marginalized sector, Lumad Bakwit Schools, which have been affected by the pandemic.
- Frontliners for the Frontlines (October 2020): Partnership with Phi Lambda Delta Sorority that launched a fundraising campaign to provide support for the frontliners in their fight against the pandemic. NSC participated as the organization’s publicity partner.
- RAConnect (October 2020): Partnership with Rotaract Club UPM which held a donation drive for the benefit of the rural school communities in Camarines Sur, Bicol. The council participated in the project by sharing online materials and sending monetary donations.
- ADHIKA: UPM Peer Empowering Peers Society Donation Drive (April 2021): ADHIKA aims to bridge and connect the lives of marginalized communities with those who are willing to help them to survive this pandemic and lockdown. The council partnered with UPM Peer Empowering Peers Society. All donations were safely sent to the partner beneficiary, Coring Imnida, and served as financial aid for marginalized urban poor communities such as jeepney drivers who experienced loss of livelihood.
2. CN Merch
UP NSC’s merchandise aims to showcase IskoNars pride through items of clothing. Aside from serving its purpose as a college souvenir, it also acts as an embodiment of one’s experiences in the university. It is also a token of belonging that brings the students to unite anywhere they go. More importantly, the sales garnered from this income-generating project will allow the council to implement more programs for the UPCN Student body.
3. NSC Advocacies
Assertion and Diplomacy
As the highest governing body of the students in UP College of Nursing, the NSC puts and protects the students’ interests above all.
Academic Excellence
The NSC upholds UP College of Nursing’s recognition for being the Center of Excellence in Nursing Education through projects that promote academic excellence among its constituents.
Safe Space for the Student Body
The NSC advocates for the security, safety, and wellness of the studentry through being an avenue for the students’ grievances and concerns.
Awareness on Local and National Issues
Apart from being students, we are Filipinos first and foremost, hence the NSC promotes raising awareness on local and national issues among the students so as to encourage them to be agents of change.
Unities with Outside Organizations
Development should not be within the confines of the college, hence the NSC widens the opportunities for the students through partnering with other colleges, student councils, organizations, and alliances within and outside UP Manila.
Strengthening Faculty-Student Relations
To guarantee that the students’ voices are heard and understood, the NSC aims to strengthen the relationship between the faculty and the students.
