UPCN Hosts 9th APEDNN Meeting

UPCN hosted the 9th Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Emergency and Disaster Nursing Network (APEDNN) held on 24-26 September 2015 at Century Park Hotel, Manila. With the theme “Strengthening Capacity and Linkages for Disaster Risk Management”, this year’s meeting anchored heavily on the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 as guide for planning and direction of the Network for 2016-2020.

The Meeting featured key lessons from recent disasters (e.g. Nepal earthquake and flood in Vanuatu); best practices on disaster education, and training of nurses and midwives in disaster; and capacity-building in maternal and child health focusing on the Essential Intrapartum and Newborn Care (EINC) in emergencies.

As the APEDNN Secretariat from 2013—2015, UPCN hosted the Core Working Group Meeting on September 24 and the Meeting Proper of September 25-26. This was attended by 72 participants from 22 countries from Asia-Pacific and South East Asia regions. This made possible through the generous support of WHO, UP System, UP Manila and the Philippine Nurses Association.

The 2015 meeting marks the end of UPCN’s three-year term as Network Secretariat. The College was elected to this role in 2012 in Malaysia. For the term 2016-2020, the Secretariat role will be shared between Mahidol University (Thailand), and Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
