CN Hosts 17th East Asia Forum of Nursing Scholars (EAFONS)

About six hundred delegates from member countries participated in the 17th East Asian Forum of Nursing Scholars (EAFONS) International Conference hosted by the University of the Philippines College of Nursing held last February 20 to 21, 2014 at the Century Park Hotel Manila.

This year’s conference is geared towards strengthening graduate education in the Region and advancing research collaboration with EAFONS as key player in forging strategic partnerships. Delivering the keynote address was Dr. Patricia Davidson, Dean of the John Hopkins University School of Nursing and President of the International Council on Women’s Health and Issues (ICOWHI). Speakers from the Queen’s Nursing Institute ( UK) , Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, World Health Organization, and Florida Atlantic University emphasized the relevance of graduate education, research and partnerships in today’s nursing landscape. The Manila Conference was made possible in coordination with reputable nursing schools mostly Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Centers of Excellence and the Association of Deans of Philippine Colleges of Nursing (ADPCN). The UP College of Nursing involvement was in full force headed by the Deans Araceli Balabagno and Lourdes Marie Tejero with the support of the faculty, staff and students. Dr. Josefina Tuazon (BSN’77, MN’) over-all chair of the conference, also sits in the EAFONS Executive Committee with Dr. Carmelita Divinagracia (PhD’). The vast networking and collaboration made the event a big success.
EAFONS was initiated in 1997 at the Hongkong Polytechnic University to provide a regular regional forum for doctoral prepared nurse academics and their students. Since then, yearly forums have been held in its member countries, Hongkong, South Korea, Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan, Japan and Singapore.
